ARTS – The Art of the Picnic
Making it in the art world is no picnic, but neither is having a picnic. There’s always a lot of pesky background work to take care of before the cork pops. But every weekend this summer the classy folk at NGV are eliminating the effort with their new Art of the Picnic pack. You get a nice soft rug and cushions to collapse upon amongst the Rodins and de Koonings in the Grollo Equiset Sculpture Garden, plus a selection of gourmet treats by head chef Terry Clark. Oh, and some good bottles (for that other kind of art ‘opening’).
Available Sat–Sun 10am–5pm until 31 March.
NGV International, 180 St Kilda Road, Melbourne. Optional bookings Tel: 03 8620 2444 or

STONE’S THROW – Wye River General Store
A couple of years ago local bon vivant Dave Sharry (of Riverland Bar and Wall Two 80) got together with some friends, drove down the Great Ocean Road and bought the Wye River General Store. Now, after an impressive makeover by six degrees, the restaurant is serving some of the best food in town for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Actually, save for the pub, they’re serving the only food in town. But we swear on a tank of petrol there’s no shirking going on here. Add pork belly and pickled octopus salad to your beachside diet.
35 Great Ocean Road, Wye River. Tel: 03 5289 0247.
