LOST AND FOUND VOLUME 4 SNAPSHOT 5
ARTS – Utopian Slumps
A slump is what we were in when Mel Loughnan’s not-for-profit curator-run art space Utopian Slumps closed its Collingwood doors last year. But nothing says pick-me-up like a removalist and a re-opening. The all-new, city-based Slumps is a commercial venture with its own stable of artists, but it promises the same craft-driven aesthetic and dedication to artistic development. Oh, and legendary launches. The new location is just as laneway/warehouse as the last. The first exhibition is a group show featuring work by 15 artists – from Sean Bailey to Amber Wallis.
33 Guildford Lane, Melbourne.
Territorial Pissings exhibition.
Open until 8 May, Wed–Sat 12–6pm.
EVENTS – Next Wave Festival
Apocalyptic fantasies; Busby Berkeley murders; an ARI world’s fair; Saint Sebastian’s death by arrows, unseen rooftops and underground trenches. Oh, and 47 sausage dogs. The Next Wave Festival happens in Melbourne biennially and this is most definitely the on-year. With a program designed by People Collective, the 2010 event is gearing up for a 13 May launch promising more than 53 projects by young contemporary artists from Australia and the Asia Pacific region. See you at the all-night outdoor video art marathon. We’ll be the ones with the safety helmets.
2010 Next Wave Festival,
13–30 May, citywide.
